So You Think You Can Dance: Local Version

I had the distinct pleasure recently of dining at the Med Hookah lounge in Madison, WI, which aside from having great Mediterranean food also feature middle eastern dancers (aka bellydancers, though some don’t like that term).
Those Who Can, Teach
One of the performers there is Arielle, a teacher at the Madison Multicultural Dance Center with Mona N’wal and others. Though very young, Arielle’s been dancing since she was fourteen, and that leads to quite a bit of experience as well as talent.
That evening she did a three-part set, starting with two traditional songs and then a blended hip-hop/bellydance routine of her …read more

I’m kind of shooting myself in the foot here, because by telling you I’m decreasing my own chances of winning…but TVSquad is offering an all-expense paid trip for two to L.A. including air fare, hotel, $200 cash (should be good for lunch) and tickets to see the show.
All you have to do is comment there and you’ll be entered in the random drawing. Good luck – and if you win, remember I’m a very pleasant travel companion…

Dancewatcher: my counterpart on Spekked

Dancewatcher: my counterpart on Spekked

One of the benefits of being part of the B5Media family is that there are a lot of other bloggers out there doing neat things – though I occupy a pretty unique niche here in the lifestyles channel, and most of the celebrity watches are less about the performing arts than individual celebs.
DanceWatcher  Lynn Devries is the exception. A veteran blogger, she also loves (like me) the dance reality shows. I’m kicking myself for not noticing her blog sooner, but now I’m itching for the next season of dance to start off. See, far from being a competition, when you …read more

Bill T. Jones & the Blogosphere

Bill T. Jones & the Blogosphere

“…this company and, indeed, the entire organization is an informal federation of individuals who come in, make a contribution and, in most cases, move on. Secondly, I am reminded that this art form, like this federation, is fragile and ephemeral, dependant on human agreement and subtle affinities in a matrix of time and circumstance that constantly shift in surprising ways.” — Bill T. Jones
Reading Bill’s Blog today, this phrase struck me as we continue to have our conversation via the web about the role of bloggers vs. “traditional” journalists. Stay with me for this metaphor…
Traditional journalism is like a traditional …read more

It’s over: Sabra is America’s Favorite Dancer

It’s over: Sabra is America’s Favorite Dancer

…and I’m not surprised at all. She had as much talent as Danny, and was more likeable than anybody else. I honestly suspected she had it from the Scream during the Wade Robson solo.
I didn’t actually get to watch the final show – and from what I hear, I’m a little lucky, as Cat made a truly valiant effort to survive wardrobe’s attempt to portray her as a pregnant tulle monster. And the ending was apparently very anticlimactic: “It’s Sabra! Kthxbye!” was the way Blogging SYTYCD put it, and that’s just wrong. After all this time, come on, you’ve learned …read more

What the Judges Should Have Said to Lacey & Sabra

What the Judges Should Have Said to Lacey & Sabra

Nigel Lithgoe: "Ladies, this dance finally brought us to the truth of what this show is all about: DANCE. There’s a reason that’s the biggest word in our logo, and the word ‘you’ is just as small as the rest of them. There comes a point where we all need to be reminded that the dance is bigger than the personalities, the skills, the technique, the sexuality, and the people, so that we can make it something bigger than the sum of the dancers and choreographer, make it into something bigger, more artful. You both changed your styles completely for …read more

Hard? yeah. But wow, she can dance…

Lauren talks about how it feels to NOT be in the finals in this article. Kudos for her for having the integrity to go through with it. I really hope I get to see her on the tour…
Tonight Ladyfox will be watching the first bit of the finale. Prepare for snark…

“The Cruelest cut of All”

“The Cruelest cut of All”

OK, they get points just for having a Tom Waits song at the beginning. Looks like more Wade Robson to me, but then again, I’m just used to zombies. Labelle, my viewing companion, suggested that this is the "Harry Potter" tribute, with these as the Mer People. I don’t remember them too well.
Cat Deeley: "Holy crap, what did she slaughter to make that outfit?" A more graceful question than my "OMG, she’s got feather boobs!" Jan Brady wearing a dead peacock chicken is the verdict. My, we’re snarky tonight.
Wow. I’m impressed that they would put this on mainstream tv….though having …read more

So You Think You Can Dance

So You Think You Can Dance

My friend Nyxx roundly chastised me last week for being so lax in my SYTYCD coverage. I can’t really blame her; to be honest, it was a bit of stage fright, because I’d done a good job on it the week before (even got a mention on Blogging SYTYCD!) and I felt the pressure to come up with something even more entertaining
So…in rhyming couplets, perhaps?

Cat’s dress doth shimmer and sparkle with sequins,Only six left? How the suspense doth peaken!

No, I’m thinking this is not going to go well…

Lauren Solo Week 7Uploaded by mickeymcc

I’ll be honest – after finally seeing this solo, I was surprised that she didn’t get voted off – until I remembered that at this point in the competition, it’s all about the audience that had already voted – and there’s no way that Lauren would not have gotten more votes than Sara based on their performances the night before.
Makes me sad, though, because unless she tears it up on Wednesday, she’s not going to be around…
