Medicine Crow tonight at Magdalena’s Teahouse

Medicine Crow tonight at Magdalena’s Teahouse

I’m lucky enough to be in Lansing, MI tonight working with a web client, and she has invited me out to Magdalena’s Teahouse tonight to see Medicine Crow perform.
” Teaching himself the guitar at the age of twelve, Mike began playing earnestly, but being self-taught, it took him a lifetime to learn what theoried guitar players learn in weeks and months of formal study. Realizing that, though eventually finding his own style, he concentrated on what he is best known for now: song writing. The result produced what could be argued as a sound that is perhaps best summed up …read more

Jammin’ and Havin’ Fun: Loose Marbles with Meshiya Lake

"The world needs more music like this" was the comment of Ani Moore when she posted this link. I couldn’t agree more.

Screamin’ Cyn-Cyn & the Pons: Theatrical Punk

Screamin’ Cyn-Cyn & the Pons: Theatrical Punk

Last night my friend Betty Wantsme (yes, she’s a burlesque performer, why do you ask?) took me out to the High Noon Saloon in Madison, WI to see “Screamin’ Cyn-Cyn & the Pons.” “I’m not sure if you’ll like the music,” she warned me, “but I know you’ll like the performance.”
I knew I would too, just from watching them set up. The drummer was sitting there, smiling and twinkling-eyed, twirling his sticks and patiently waiting for his mates to finish their tuning and stuff so he could start banging on things, his bass drum bouncing with little McDonalds Playland balls. …read more

Great Stop-Motion Video for a Great New Band

Great Stop-Motion Video for a Great New Band

Holding the Pilots/Holding the Facts is a video created by my friend and colleague Shelby Floyd. He does an especially good job in telling a story with the objects, and the use of rack focus and just plain composition is fantastic. Enjoy!

KISS Fragrances

KISS Fragrances

The beat moves on for KISS, the band of outrageous commercialism and merchandising.  They are taking advantage of their rising, nostalgic status and aging fan-base.  They have matured from school kid’s lunch boxes to fragrances.
Yes, that is right.  You, your spouse, your best friend, male or female can discover your favorite KISS fragrance.  The line contains colognes, body splashes and the like, all to help increase your libido and make everyone in the KISS Army as attractive as their illustrious leaders.  Attractive as the members of KISS???  Hmmm….
The merchandising does not end there.  On June 27th, they will open the first KISS Coffeehouse in …read more

Blog of the month week – Greg Hester Jazz

I know, I know, I have been remiss in bringing you all that’s best in movies, music, dance and theatre. I, in a word, suck, but this blog is enough to bring me out of hiding.
The blog of the week this week is, Greg Hester Jazz. The blog is frequently updated and offers a great resource for the casual jazz fan looking for music opinions, links and photos.
Big swing bands have come and gone – some good, some even great – but since the early forties, the one quality for which all big bands have striven (strived?) – …read more

Ralph’s World – Show Review

Ralph’s World – Show Review

Some time ago at the Children’s Books, Toys and Things blog here at AboutWeblogs.com, Hsien posted about children’s music. I posted that Ralph’s World is a great musical start for little ones; in no small part because the music is more than slightly palatable for the older generation as well.
Ralph works with real musical instruments and his songs often have a grownup undertone to them. I’d tell you which ones, but it’s more fun trying to guess. Ralph is an accomplished musician and if you’ve ever heard of The Bad Examples, he also heads that band.
While it’s …read more
