another Disney Triumph: “Toy Story” Hits the Waves

Randy Newman is the inspiration for the duo Valerie Vigoda and Brendan Milburn (of GrooveLily) to produce seven songs for the Disney cruise version of Toy Story – the Musical.
Described as a musical of “heartfelt whimsy” the set and costumes are some of the most complex ever produced for Disney. Ann Closs-Farley designed them all, including a 9′ tall Rex the Dinosaur.

I have to give some kudos to the brains over at Disney – putting the shows through their paces on cruise ships (talk about a captive audience!) has got to be a lot cheaper than doing an off-broadway tour, and as you’ll see from the interviews on that site they do not sacrifice anything in the way of professionalism and resources. I can just see the big Buzz/Woody statues on Times Square now. It’s kind of the antithesis of the reality-show based cast – and that may be an indication of why Disney has hit after hit while Grease! and Legally Blonde flounder.
I also find it kind of amusing – one of the big triumphs of the original Toy Story movie was the fantastic computer animation. Textures and motion modeled after reality, looking more “real” than ever…and now we’re trying to make reality look like a computer generated model. Round and round the circle goes…
