Top 5 Performing Arts Resolutions for 2008

Tis the season for resolutions, right? So here we go:

  1.  Get back into my body. I’ve let my dance body go for about a year now, and it’s a shame, with all the opportunities for Contact Improv, Argentinian Tango, and the like.
  2. Find my voice. This is one I’ve got a head start on – I performed with my girlfriend over Xmas playing guitar, and have been picking up the piano again as well. But I really do miss singing in a choir setting – something about harmonies really does it for me. I want to explore that.
  3. See more indie artists. I tried doing more of that last night, but Medicine Crow was cancelled. But there’s never really a shortage, in a college town, of new talent in the performing arts – and if I’m lucky, they’ll be bad, and I can get all Simon Cowellesque on them!
  4. Catch up on big-ticket shows. There are some Broadway staples I’ve just missed. Aida. Wicked. Lion King. Mamma Mia. I’m seeing the Lion King soon, in Appleton, WI no less. But I need to find a way to catch these when they come through my town; I’m feeling like my Critic Cred is slipping.
  5. Learn to Embrace the Reality Talent Show. With all my kvetching about how bad American Idol was, when I saw Jennifer Hudson in “Dreamgirls” it all became worth it. I’ve had great fun watching “So You Think You Can Dance”, and even “Dancing with the Stars” had its moments (though I’ve still not forgiven “Grease – You’re the One” [shudder]). So I think I’ll just give up the complaining and deal with the fact that amidst the dross there are magical moments of performance, and learn to enjoy them.

So…those are my Performing Arts resolutions for 2008. What are yours?

Just a quick heads up – there’s another dance reality show starting on ABC tonight – I think it’s Dance War or something like that…
