Where Improv Comics Go to Di–er, Make Money?

by Gray on December 31st, 2007

This morning at breakfast I was shocked to see the Price is Right game show up on the TV at the diner…and Drew Carey as host. I’d heard that Bob Barker had retired, but I’d never expected to see Drew Carey as a replacement. I’ve immense respect for the man for his hosting talents of “Who’s Line is It Anyway?”, which used to be my family’s favorite group-watching show (though some of the jokes pushed the boundaries of “ABC Family”, that’s for sure).

I confess, it betrays a lack of respect for Game Show hosts - it always seemed to me to be the place where people went when their careers weren’t going places, and Drew didn’t seem to fit in that genre. I would understand if it was a money-making move, though - kind of like soap operas are for actors, they pay the bills, and it certainly can’t hurt his popularity. He’s apparently doing a good job, too, his improv skills helping the flow of the show:

”That’s the thing about Carey - he kept things moving. When one contestant (who did actual cartwheels onstage) hemmed and hawed, Carey kept urging her - politely, insistently - to get a move on. “We’ve got a lot of show to do,” as he put it.”–Bill Goodykoontz, the Arizona Republic

Although I’m a bit perplexed at Carey’s politics, I like him as a comic (and even have a copy of ‘Dirty Jokes and Beer). I was also surprised at his transition to game show host, but after thinking about it agree that it’s a good fit for him.
