Top Five Ways to Get Your Dance Noticed

by Gray on December 27th, 2007

I wish this were actually my article. Instead, it’s just a pointer, but a good one: NPR has written up the ways that dance critics feel that dancers set themselves apart (both as performers and choreographers). You have some of the usual suspects here - Pilobolus (have you seen their new calendar? Breathtaking!) and Alvin Ailey. But you also have newcomers like Pittsburgh Ballet’s Kumiko Tsuji, who graces the cover of Dance Magazine. Critic and editor-in-chief of Dance Magazine, Wendy Perron had this to say about her impromptu solo performance of a jazzy piece by Dwight Rhoden called Smoke ‘n’ Roses.

“She just kind of slithered through it,” Perron says, “She would do this little twist in her hips and then the leg would extend and then she’d be pirouetting and you wouldn’t really know what happened but you’d seen this very detailed, fluid movement. She just fascinated me.”

“Detailed, fluid movement.” Just one of the five ideas that get dancers noticed. Enjoy.
