Harvey Fierstein Blogs “A Catered Affair”
One of the best sources for me to feel a part of the Great White Way is to read the Broadway Blog. They’ve gotten even better: Harvey Fierstein, author of hit plays like Torch Song Trilogy and Spookhouse, is putting up a new musical called “A Catered Affair” (based on the movie).
I’m sure I’ll be writing more about the actual show later – instead, let’s talk about the use of social media in this context. He’s blogging this, and like the joys of reading Sally Potter’s blog as she launches Carmen, his blog is more than just a “Show’s going great! Come and see it!” advertisement. No, he actually talks a lot about issues of critics who don’t do their research, prejudice being the “enemy of art”…and I think one of the most charming things is that amidst the interesting writing there are copyediting errors.
Please understand that I was not right about those subjects because I am some prophet with a crystal ball. I was right because, before I put pen to paper, I do my research. I don’t create just out of my own opinion. Only a lazy intellect assumes that he/she already knows everything about a subject via incidental heresay (sic).
In a polished article, this would be annoying, but in this? It lends a touch of realism and immediacy to the whole process.
