Results show…

Wow. The opening is certainly intense…Mia Michaels, I think? (later: YES!!! I WAS RIGHT! WOOHOO!) This is in fact one of the reasons I like this show. I think that most of America would not watch this kind of dance, ever, if they were not exposed to it here…as it is, you could invite your boyfriend to a dance concert and say "It’ll be like that thing we saw last week.

(note: I was also offended, as a former Marine, by the outfit Mia wore, and some people that I talked to at the party where I watched this didn’t understand that. I didn’t push it, but I respect her more that she came out to say that she apologized.)

"Last night, Mia wore a Marine Corp Dress Blues Uniform jacket, which apparently had its chevrons (rank insignia) applied upside down on the lower end of its sleeves and this was seen as being disrespectful. Since Wade had said that his dance was “anti-war” this was seen as being an anti-war and anti-troops statement by some. Most on the boards took the position that it was very rude and disrespectful to the troops or that Mia had no idea what the jacket meant and only wore it as part of the theme of the show. Many expressed doubt as well that Wade’s “anti-war” routine was “anti-troops”"

Mika. Yawn. It’s certainly a problem, filling the same amount of time with fewer dancers. And ok, it’s bringing back the Golden Age of Variety TV, live, and shades of Ed Sullivan, and all that. I bet we’re going to a commercial break.

Sabra was of course, safe. But I was right about Jaimie…in the "danger zone"? My friend Taymara, watching it with me, noted that the seats look kind of like bidets…could that be intentional?

WHAT!!! NO!!! LAUREN WAS SO MUCH BETTER THAN SARA!!!

(sigh). I guess every show has to have its "Gah!!!" moment.

Now the guys…I say Dominic & Kameron. Right on the first…Dominic is on the bidet in the danger zone. It’s between Pasha & Kameron? Oh, Pasha’s totally safe, I think…and…yep. I was right. I’m getting good at this, wonder if there’re vegas odds?

Shoot. I like both Lauren and Jaimie. I’m going to be sad if either goes home…

OK, watching Jaimie, she’s there, but I think Lauren’s a better dancer.

OK. Did Dominic just do as many spins as Danny did, but upside down?

Lauren…I don’t know. The beginning was weak, but she really came through at the end.

Kameron just did not have anything left to give. In between the two of them, Dominic was so obviously better, it’s not going to happen.

"OK…so this was all pointless?" says my friend, as we get to the "dancing for your life" part.

I think Dominic will be gone…and…Jaimie. Jaimie had a bad time with Dominic’s waltz, through no fault of her own. (later) Yep. Sorry about that…but glad Lauren’s still there.

And now, we’ll see about the guys…OH! I was wrong. But I’m not really surprised. He kind of reached the end of his talent, I think.

That’s it, folks. More SYTYCD next week…and meanwhile, we’re going to talk tomorrow about sharing beauty in groups.

Hello all! Why did the up side down logo on the jacket offend the marines? I would really like to know. My first reaction is that we all have to be very careful in this country. We claim that our military is fighting at least in part to maintain this country as a free country. Mia has the right to wear whatever she wants on the show without apology. If we start dictating to people what to wear, what to watch, who to marry, etc. it will no longer be a free country. It will be more like a nazi country and that’s not what our military is fighting for.

It’s not about dictating what to wear at all. She is certainly free to wear whatever she’d like. However, if you saw someone wearing, say, an EMT uniform, with “Certified Defibbrilation Qualified” patches on the arms, etc, you would assume they had gone through the training, etc, in order to wear that, right?

The uniform of a Marine is more than fashion. For Marines, at least, they have to go through some incredibly difficult training and discipline in order to have the right to wear that insignia, and that uniform. ONce they have, and they wear it, it is a public declaration of their willingness to defend to the death those very same liberties you describe. This is not hyperbole; as a former Marine, I can tell you that it is completely serious.

I love Mia Michaels. She is an incredible choreographer, and an amazing artist, and (from what I can tell) a fun person all around. But just as I would not go around telling people that I choreographed for Cirque (when I haven’t), seeing her wear the uniform with the same insignia that I’d worked so hard to acquire kind of cheapened my own contribution to serving the country.

Not to a huge extent – I was not one of those who wrote in, nor would I yell at her or say she couldn’t wear it. No, it’s more that I would appreciate it, as a measure of courtesy and respect for those who have worked and earned the right to wear that uniform as a symbol of their service, that the actual insignia not be used. Change the colors, use different lines, something – just out of sensitivity to those who, over the years, have lost so much.
