“…defiantly confronting ruin”: Mikhail Baryshnikov
Tobi Tobias has a poignant review of Mikhail Baryshnikov’s recent performance with Hell’s Kitchen Dance at the Howard Gilman Performance Space, Baryshnikov Arts Center, NYC on June 22-24, 2007. The review means a lot to me; Baryshnikov was the inspiration, quite literally, for my own foray into dance; it was seeing the solo at the beginning, particularly with the reverse roll/hold, that made me want to move like that.
Not that I ever did, exactly. But I moved. And even now, with my own bad knees and aging body, I am grateful for the experience of having a body that I can feel pass through space.
"He has retained a certain amount of his legendary physical dexterity. Though muted, it still represents the Platonic ideals of classical dancing. When he’s standing in place, his posture is too taut, almost militaristic, as if defiantly confronting ruin."
