So You Think You Can Dance, 6-26-07

Tonight we watch SYTYCD with Megan (I won’t print her nickname, since this is a family blog), a burlesque dancer with Foxy Veronica’s Peach Pies.

DEBBIE ALLEN? (swoon). We’re going to have some actual intelligence tonight! So glad she made the comment about training…and the camaraderie of dancing. "Oh, honeychile, the hair comes off too!" She’s so great! I just wish they’d replaced Mary Murphy instead of Mia. Sorry, but I do not like her.

OK, the ambition in life thing seems like it’s….I dunno. A Miss America pageant?

Sarah and Jesus (Krump) NICE pirouette in the beginning. Megan and I both noticed that we watched Sarah more than Jesus, and I think that’s really about time. Debbie couldn’t keep her eyes off him? What? Seeing Sarah really move in her element was fantastic. The interaction really seemed to be more of a tango almost, in some ways.

verdict: totally safe.

Cedric and Shauna (contemporary ) Well, at least Mia is choreographing. I’ll be interested to see if it impresses me – I’m kind of jaded for all the other contempo stuff I’ve seen. (watching) No. Sorry. He’s obviously waiting for beats, he’s really good when she hads him doing what he normally does…but in things like the catch of Shauna, he did not look like he had control. And frankly, when 1/4 of your choreographed dance consists of you crying in a corner, it’s not going to be too impressive. How will Shauna end up in the bottom 3? She’s dancing with Cedric! I’ve really gotten to the point where I dislike him, just because he’s dragging down his partners. I hate to say it, but I agree with Mary Murphy. He showed no growth. At this point, he is just marking time. I appreciate him trying to give a final message…but I think he WHAT HE JUST GOT INTO THE DEBBIE ALLEN DANCE ACADEMY? WTF? Sorry. Just a little jealous, now.

verdict: definitely in the bottom 3

Lacie and Cameron  (quickstep) I liked both the  costumes. Wow…he has normal hair! However, they really don’t look comfortable either with each other or in the dance – the laying down at the end just kind of seemed relieved at the end. The whole thing just seemed shaky. Notice how Debbie never actually said it was good? I think they’re all just being too nice. Cameron’s frame didn’t look elegant, it looked like he was still wearing the torture device the choreographer did it.

verdict: Possibly in the bottom 3.

Danny and Anya (hip hop ) It will be interesting to see if Danny actually dances with someone for a change, or if he once again acts like she’s part of the set. Please, God, don’t let Mary Murphy scream again. Please. I’ll be good. Dan Karaty is a great choreographer. It’s not about learning the steps, though – I’m not sure that he’s going to convince me that he’s really doing the dance, as opposed to just marking it. He never seems invested in the dances I’ve seen so far. (watching) OK. I still think he threw things off a bit because he’s a bit too lazy and show-offy to really dance in sync. But the choreography was incredible – I can’t wait for it to hit YouTube so I can add this bit to my dance collection. And they really pulled it off, and I did see interaction, and chemistry. Honestly, I thought her worries were totally unfounded.

verdict: definitely safe

Dominic and Sabra (rhumba ) This is the first one that actually seems like a couple to me. I have nothing to say about this one because it was just so damn GOOD. It was beautiful, and I love the fact that they did it slow (which is so much harder). they are an amazing couple, and since Faina is gone, Sabra is my new favorite. I don’t think she’ll have enough appeal for the general public to make it to the very end…but she’s my favorite. God? Why did you make Mary scream again? I was good. I was.

verdict: safe

Lauren and Neil (tango) "mmmm…metrosexuals" was the comment of both Megan and my daughter. This is international, or at least, not Argentinian tango, so to me it’s going to be stilted…but entertaining. (iwatching) Picking up your partner and moving acroass the floor is cheating. I liked the flourishes, but when they moved, I never got the connected and slinky smooth feel of the tango. The butt-in-the-face move at the end really didn’t seem that nice, either. It just wasn’t smooth enough, as Debbie Allen said. "Dance like dudes," Nigel? What exactly does that mean?

verdict: bottom 3

Hok and Jaimie (jazz) Yay! Wade Robson! I have a bad feeling about this – I think it will be good, but I think it will be too weird to please the audience (side note: I hate to say it, but I hate Jamie’s laugh) The lighting is bothering me – it really didn’t show off that fantastic extension. I’m also wondering why they lost the whole flower/hummingbird thing so soon. I suppose they had to…but honestly, I was not impressed with this piece. It seemed trite where they were in character and boring where they weren’t. Sorry, Debbie, I disagree wholeheartedly. Megan thought it was too "concepty", and my daughter Danica thought the ending sucked. "Oh, after all that we’ll just…hug." I think they did a good dance, but I don’t think that most people will like it enough to vote for them.

verdict: possibly bottom 3

Jessie and Pasha (cha cha) Fun! Cheekiness! This is Megan’s kind of dance.  I can’t wait to see this one. She is adorable. I think he should flip his hair, and she can take her shirt – no, wait, my daughter’s in the room. Whoa. Drama. Ambulance. Pasha looks really nervous. (watching) Wow, they have him dancing with a woman of some size! This is so great! I’m so glad they showed this! I’m sorry for Jessie, but I thought that this turn of events is a huge step forward for dancers everywhere, for showing that it’s heart, not size, that makes the dancer work.

verdict: definitely safe

In the end, I think that Lauren and Neil were stilted enough that Hok & Jaimie are safe. We’ll see tomorrow…I’m watching with a wonderful soapmaker, LadyFox.

Well, I was going to ask you what you thought of it tonight, but now I know. I actually really liked Hok and Jaimie. Though I was saying “Jazz? In what way was that anything resembling jazz? Not even the music….” But it was pretty, definitely concepty, and fun. The Tango made me want to cry.

But see, I’m not a dance expert AT ALL, so who knows? I agree about Mary screaming. She does this often?

I am now a convert, and will be watching this show regularly. You’ve created a monster. :)

Ok, sorry for the late commentary on this – had to catch up on the dances I missed first.

I actually really liked Sara and Jesus krumping – thought it was well choreagraphed, but you could tell Jesus wasn’t exactly comfortable with it.

Cedric and Shauna’s contemporary, well it was ok, but I agree with Mary – it wasn’t fantastic from Cedric because that’s what he always does – those kind of loosey goosey movements. And I really don’t think they did Mia’s choreagraphy justice.

Lacey and Kameron – I thought it was pretty good, but they definately didn’t seem to have the connection they they had in the previous dances.

Danny and Anya – Liked the choreagraphy, but they weren’t in sync and didn’t hit it as hard as I think it should have. But atleast Danny wasn’t so damn uptight this week.

Dominic and Sabra – I’m really impressed with how far Dominic has come and well Sabra, she’s one talented chick. It was sexy, sensual and they seemed to have a great connection.

Lauren and Neil – Wasn’t that great. It was ok, but nothing stood out to me.

Hok and Jaime – I loved this dance. Yes it was very conceptual but it was beautiful and I think that is what the audience connected with. They both understood their roles in the dance and portrayed them perfectly.

Pasha and partner – Well, this is Pasha’s kind of dance, but man, he did look good. He flowed well with the piece and did very well for not knowing his partner well.
