Catching up with So You Think You Can Dance
jaimie & Hok: I really loved this dance. It was hot, energetic, they had chemistry, though I’m beginning to feel like the guys are stealing the girls’ thunder just in flamboyancy. That being said, not that I’m an expert, but I didn’t even realize it was a samba until after it was done. In retrospect I can see the elements, including the bump, and the arms swinging over head (I hated that stop-start motion, btw) but it seemed more like a dance with samba elements than a samba with creative contsructions.
Sabra & Dominic: Well, it’s contemporary…but I wasn’t really impressed with anything until about 1/2 way through the routine. Then things got more interesting, and some of the training paid off. Sabra really flowed through this dance, and Dominic, while not overwhelming (and I think he knew it, he did not look happy at the end) but there were moments of precision and grace, and he worked really well with supporting the greater talent of his partner. I think Mia was a little gushy, but thankfully Nigel brought us down to earth by talking about Dominic having to shave his toes. It does show dedication…
Jessi & Pasha : I really liked this on a dance level, but again, I felt that he overshadowed her. I’m not sure if that is simply because we’re not used to seeing men dance so well, but he really reminded me of a jaunty Gene Kelly with his traipsing about. The choreography was fun, and they showed it, using athleticism and really fantastic energy to just pour it on. No doubt these two are safe.
Lauren & Neil: Mia really brought it out – again, the guy just overshadowed her. I wasn’t impressed with the dance – a couple of stunts, the leaps and the ronde de jambe and it just looked like a couple of club kids going around. OK, the leap was fantastic – but honestly, not that hard, especially for someone of his athleticism. I didn’t feel this dance pushed them.
There you have it. My picks for the bottom three? Cedric, definitely. Probably Jimmy & Shauna, for their sloppy popping. Or Jessi & Lauren, actually, because they just didn’t dance as thoroughly as their partners.
We’ll see. I’ll be catching up on it late, so we’ll just have to enjoy the results tomorrow!
