Interview with my Dream Job: Dance Director at Cirque du Soleil:

Interview with my Dream Job: Dance Director at Cirque du Soleil:

Dancehunter (huh, just mistyped that Dancehunger, Freudian slip perhaps?) got a fantastic interview with Alison Crawford, the Artistic Director for Cirque’s Corteo. The whole interview is well worth reading, but I especially like this bit, about how Cirque’s philosophy of performance and technology work together:

"Corteo is one of the most technical touring shows that we have. We have had some major technical work and always need to make sure the fluidity is working. We added a lot of the show and have done a considerable amount of tweaking to get to where we are today. It’s got to grow with …read more

In my day job, I am covering a public hearing. Parents are upset because of arts funding cut in our district. One made a very practical argument, and I honestly think it’s the only argument that has any hope of actually making a difference: that is, we live in a visual and storytelling world. Our country more and more is becoming (sometimes, admittedly, to our embarrassment) the world’s entertainer. So why not accept that? Make our kids the greatest artisans and performers, and reap the benefits?

Interview with Colleen Coy on Madison Opera’s “Pearl Fishers”

Interview with Colleen Coy on Madison Opera’s “Pearl Fishers”

Yesterday I got to renew my acquaintance with the dancer Colleen Coy, who is performing choreography by Maureen Janson with tonight’s opening of “The Pearl Fishers”, an opera by Georges Bizet (better known for Carmen). Rather than transcribe, I wanted to just let you hear her own words, and especially the energy and enjoyment that comes through in her voice when she talks about working with the opera.
I was curious, since I’d found a lot of differences moving from the theatre world to the dance world in terms of production methods, to see if she had any difficulties–or particular joys–in …read more

Interesting cross-discipline piece with Carmina Burana and Madison Symphony

Interesting cross-discipline piece with Carmina Burana and Madison Symphony

While I am, admittedly, really excited about seeing the Madison Opera’s rendition of the Pearl Fishers (even in nosebleed seats, the thought of Bizet that I’m not familiar with is like knowing that your favorite band just released a new album), this other event caught my eye via a very informative artist’s blog:
OH, FORTUNA

Inspiration for this exhibition stems from the Madison Symphony Orchestra’s scheduled performance of Carmina Burana in May. Orff’s music provides cohesion for the variety of art photography, printmaking, mixed media, sculpture and painting that comprises the exhibition. The symphony’s themes of fate, color, sensuality, balance, lust, hedonism, …read more

The Pirate Queen is Sinking Already

The Pirate Queen is Sinking Already

Well, the reviews are coming in, and they aren’t pretty. “Starts out dumb and gets dumber” is one of the kinder statements. See the chum-filled waters yourself:
” The result? Lyrics like “She’s confused about gender/She’s been too long at sea” truly stink, as do the stagnantly staged stretches of boring screeching and mushy recitative. “- the Village Voice

Well, it LOOKS like fun…

Well, it LOOKS like fun…

…but with all the bad reviews and horror stories pre-opening, I can only say that I hope the Pirate Queen has managed to patch all her leaks…

Going to see a friend dance in “The Pearl Fishers” by the Madison Opera

Going to see a friend dance in “The Pearl Fishers” by the Madison Opera

While getting coffee at Escape Coffee House, there was a young woman in line in front of me who looked vaguely familiar. When you’ve lived in a town as small as Madison for as long as I have, that’s an easy thing to have happen, but I couldn’t place her, until she recognized me and reminded me of her name, Colleen Coy, and that she’d been a part of Li Chiao-Ping Dance company during several of their concerts I tech-directed.
She told me she’s now dancing with the Madison Opera, and will be performing with them this Friday as they present:

Holy Masked Men, Batman: Phantom Reaches 8000!

Holy Masked Men, Batman: Phantom Reaches 8000!

I’m all for records, and for milestones, but every once in a while there’s one or two that simply boggle the imagination.
8000 Performances.
Now, I know there are some of you out there who are not into Mr. Webber’s music. You are sick of it, and wish he (and Mr. Rice, I’ve heard tell) would just put their music away for an eon or two and then be featured in a retrospective.
Sorry. I’m not with you on this one. Perhaps it’s because this is the music I’ve sat around the piano with my daughters and sang. Perhaps it’s because in the …read more
