Ashar Belly Dance

Much to my pleasant surprise, one of my crew for Saturday night’s concert is my old friend Seana Dishun. I used to perform in a music trio with Seana, as well as accompanying her on dumbek while she would perform traditional Middle Eastern dance.

Turns out she’s now running her own troupe, with a debut show this saturday at midnight at the Mad Cabaret at the King Club in Madison, WI. She promises more pictures, as well as video (which I’m hoping I can forward to Shanmonster). It’s an added bonus when your friends make it good!

A dancer from the young age of 6, Seana began her training in classical ballet. It was then that she discovered her fascination with expression through movement. Naturally, she expanded her repertoire to include jazz and modern dance as she progressed through her college years. After college, in a quest for varied styles of kinesthetic expression, she sought training in flamenco (Spanish dance), Bharat Natyam (classical dance from South India), West African, and Middle Eastern dance. While each form spoke differently to Seana, Middle Eastern/bellydance was the style that resonated most deeply with her. She began her bellydance training in 1992 and in that time has explored folkloric, Egyptian cabaret, gypsy/Rom, and finally found her home in tribal style. Here, she could combine all of her former dance experience, with an emphasis on bellydance, and add a bit of her own personal flair.
