OK…time to get into it: DANCING WITH THE STARS
It’s the start of a new season, and this time I’m going to be following it religiously. ABC.com has each episode online as it plays, and I’ve been itching to get back into more ballroom stuff anyway, after seeing the great tango at SEAF and teaching the basics of Argentinian tango to the youth drama group I used to mentor.
I’m glad they used "Ballroom Blitz" as the theme song…but why couldn’t they at least have gotten Tia Carrera to sing her version?
One of the very interesting parts of this is that one of the dancers, Heather Mills, is dancing with an artificial limb. While ordinarilyI would not really condone making a big deal over this, she is also an activist for one of the greatest causes I can think of:
"Activist for Adopt-a-Minefield and advocate for animal rights, Heather Mills will be the first contestant to compete with an artificial limb."
I also really like the behind-the-scenes bit, with the pro dancers telling the "stars" matter of factly "You got the arm, but not the leg," "You are not awkward…you have awkward moments," or things like that. Much more entertaining than the judges, who are caricatures (well, except Carrie Ann Inaba, who I have a mad crush on).
I feel sorry, though, for the pro Cheryl Burke. Watching Ian Ziering try to move his hips was painful, and the generous way he was judged ("wooden" is giving him more flexibility than he should be given) is a sharp contrast to the mean judges you see at other shows. I much preferred Ohno’s performance, just because he was both having fun and had the grace of a natural athlete.
"Do not question the system," he says.
"That’s what they said in the Communist countries," Paulina Porizkova replies.
"That’s where I’m from!" the teacher replies.
"Me, too," she says dryly. "That’s why we both left!"
I loved watching her dance…and not just because she is married to Rick Okasek, the lead singer from the Cars (which was the soundtrack to my summers of youth). She looked scared, but still, she was out there, trying hard. Now…Billy Ray Cyrus, a self-described "left footed hillbilly from Kentucky"…that’ll be entertaining.
I’ll write about my final analysis later, who I liked the best. But it’s definitely going to be a fun show.
