2nd Life Dance?
I’ve long been a fan of online dance, having even created a few "just-for-the-web" dances myself. Over at the Great Dance Blog, Doug Fox recently reviewed a dance recital he saw in Second Life. He had lots of techilical diccifuddies, but in the end he said:
" I thought it was intriguing and I want to learn much more about how it was created and performed. I’d like to understand how avatars are controlled, scripted, animated and synchronized. Plus, I haven’t seen other performances in SL to make comparisons. So I’m going to have to go back to an upcoming SL Ballet and also find other performances to watch – dance, theater and other types."
Here’s a YOUTUBE coverage of the event:
The problem I have with this–and Second Life in general, to be honest–is that I do not believe that one needs to be all lithe and limber to be a good dancer. Larry Goldhuber is a good example, as are the members of the Pina Bausch dance company (none of whom is under age 40). Rather than try and make avatars move in ways that, at best, poorly mimic the body, why not take the time to find the beauty in our own movement?
