The B5Media network:

The cost of theatre…

It’s the curse of working theatre–you never get to go to see shows. Whether it be local, and you miss your friends’ gigs, or if you’re in a town like NYC the only night you have free is usually the same night all the other theatres are dark. I have only had one lucky break in that, when I was able to catch a matinee of the revival of Cabaret at Studio 54 (nosebleed seats, but so incredibly worth it.

I never thought about just how much of a double-edged sword the revival of the broadway musical is to modern dance. It strips companies of their principal dancers…but who can blame them? Not even the company directors, it seems.

"You can’t blame [the dancers], because many of them have not been able to make a significant living; you’d be surprised at what some of them eat to get by," Washington added.

"And many of my dancers who don’t get into ‘Lion King’ or something like that are gone off with Madonna or some of the big-name singers, earning $1,500 or $2,000 a week — no way can I compete. It’s made the field out there for concert dance pretty desolate."

I guess we can only hope that when they are wealthy from the tours (</sarcasm>) they’ll donate to the dance companies…
