“Because i am not hanging on a wall”
I would have to say that my absolute favoritest type of performance is the kind where someone has an idea, and shares it, and suddenly people who are watching it take it far, far beyond the original purpose. Sometimes called "viral art", it is its own sort of strange performance, and keeps going long after the originator intends.
On September 24, in France, a piece called "Am I an Artwork?" will be in the Chauffre Marcel show. It invites people to consider the question, and then share their answers…and if you clicked on the link, you saw some of them. They range from the sublime to the ridiculous, things like:
- Because some official art institute spend money on you
- Because bohemian offspring, recognizer of the art, deems
- for unknown reasons you have made me think,
- Because it makes no sense to be not beautiful
- Because snakes bite my eyelids and the scream I scream turns the reptile inside out so that both of us can bleed together dead, but leisurely
But even more interesting to me are the "No" answers. "Because i am different and beauty is not mine" is particularly poignant. And here’s the thing–you can add your own. Yes, you will be part of the actual artwork in the museum if you add your own bit to site.
And then, you will be hanging on the wall.
