The B5Media network:

Goodbye, Peter Jennings

This is how totally out of it I’ve been. Over at the Genetics and Public Health Blog Hsien has posted about Peter Jennings dying this past Saturday.

He was 67 years old and had lung cancer.

I will never forget Peter Jennings. I’m strangely sad that he’s gone and wish I had noted the day. His coverage of the September 11th bombings helped me work through that terrible day. It’s cliche, but I felt like he was in it with me.

Jennings led the network’s coverage of the Sept. 11 attacks and America’s subsequent war on terrorism. He anchored more than 60 hours that week during the network’s longest continuous period of news coverage, and was widely praised for providing a reassuring voice during the time of crisis. TV Guide called him “the center of gravity,” while the Washington Post wrote, “Jennings, in his shirt sleeves, did a Herculean job of coverage.” The coverage earned ABC News Peabody and duPont awards.

Thanks for everything, Pete. In this cynical and weird day and age you worked hard and somehow made us less alone. I liked you, and I’m going to miss you.

This is so sad. He really wasn’t that old! I’m going to miss him. He had a lot of class!
