Beauty and The Geek
Or: A Review of Pathos
My husband and I are not fans of the whole “Reality Television” genre. The attempted illusion is one of normal people being caught on tape, when in reality, anyone who agrees or even auditions to appear on a “reality” television program will not be your average joe (Wouldn’t that make great show title? Must keep it in mind.)
Essentially, tuning into a ‘reality’ program just ensures that you see something with almost zero ‘reality’ actually involved.
The refreshing show, Beauty and the Geek, bypasses the reality conundrum by completely abandoning the pretension. It’s not reality. It’s a bunch of socially inept guys paired with stupid women and they are all trying to win prizes. And it’s hysterical.
This show embraces what reality television is all about, which is laughing at people sadder than ourselves.
My only issue is that, while they did fine picking the beauties, most of the geeks are guys that clean up rather well. The notable exception being Richard. Richard was not only entertaining, he was a truly bizarre human being, unable to perform the most basic social functions with out strange and alien behavior. To give you an idea, this guy was so odd, so geeky, that he was shunned by the other geeks. Proof that even the socially inept have a pecking order and certain social standards.
I like geeks, myself, and tend to find brains attractive (check out the cranium on my husband, below), but I would be uncomfortable being too long in the same room with Richard, forget about finding him attractive.
High moment: Watching Richard try and get the phone number of a 45 year old woman, until her large husband walks up. I almost died laughing.
If you get a chance, even if you’re a television snob, watch the show. It’s hysterical.
