Fame or Famine

I wrote last week on the delightful romp that was Beauty and the Geek. My main point was that anyone involved in so-called “reality” television is a person who is selling out and is, by definition, not part of reality. Beauty and the Geek makes no bones about what it is, and embraces the voyeuristic nature of its programming.

As an example of what not to do, Brat Camp takes the motherfudging cake.

Basically the plotline is that out-of-control, troubled kids get dumped in the wilderness and have to fight their way out with people trained to break them down and rebuild their attitudes. I have opinions about this sort of “therapy”, which I won’t discuss here because it has nothing to do with performing arts and a lot to do with shitty parenting, but the kind of parent who would not only be involved in this, but sign a waver to let their teen be filmed taking part in this kind of “therapy” thoroughly disgusts me.

Any thoughts about what happens when the teen, who is now famous for being an ass, goes for a job interview in then years? Any thoughts mom and dad? Didn’t think so, you wankers.

Do you think it’s possible that maybe if you’re the kind of parent who will permit your child’s bad behavior to be taped and viewed on television, maybe the fact that your kid is a nimrod isn’t their fault? Hmmmmm? Could it possibly be because they have intensely selfish and narcissistic parents?

It should be called “My Mom and Dad are Assholes and All I Got Was a Trip to Hell”. It should also die a quick death because people are too disgusted to watch it. However, I don’t expect that will be the case, do you?
